During the construction of RC Celta’s Afouteza sports complex in Mos, remains of a Neolithic Bronze Age settlement were discovered, suggesting a much larger archaeological site. To assess its full extent before expanding the future Galicia Sports 360 facility, a team from the University of Vigo (UVigo) will conduct an excavation at Coto dos Mosquitos. This research, supported by an agreement between UVigo and RC Celta, involves experts from MapasLab and other interdisciplinary teams. The year-long project, led by archaeologist Eduardo Méndez, will be the largest excavation of its kind in Galicia, offering invaluable insights into early civilizations that inhabited the area.

Since 2019, over 4,000 artifacts, mainly ceramics, have been recovered, with findings contributing to academic research and museum collections. The current phase includes a meticulous excavation across three hectares, radiocarbon analysis, and archaeological documentation. Additionally, the team will curate an exhibition at RC Celta’s facilities to showcase the discoveries. More than 40 specialists, including researchers, technicians, and students, will collaborate on this groundbreaking project, which not only deepens our historical knowledge but also strengthens the partnership between academia and sports institutions.
